SPRING ART TOUR Cape SPECIAL PROJECTS
Art videos at Twiice International Thur, 1 October, 18:00
Twiice International in Cape Town is housed in a three-story building full of contemporary design furniture. This venue provides an interesting space in which to experience the video art which will be displayed on various monitors, surrounded as you are by the cutting edge in décor and design. Twiice International now employs over 35 full time staff. They have the exclusive rights to market and distribute the Vitra range of corporate office and home furniture, as well as the Kartell, B&B Italia and Moroso range. The common link between these manufacturers is their commitment to research and development, ergonomics and the production of quality furniture.
Gregor Jenkin Fri, 2 Oct, 18:00
Nearly five years have passed since the award-winning Gregor Jenkin Studio transformed South African military surplus into a variety of domestic designs. Dubbed Skildpad, and launched in a purpose built exhibition-space in Johannesburg, it was the first of several ranges of furniture that have demonstrated Gregor Jenkin’s meticulously engineered, frequently political and often humorous approach to design. This October, however, sees the opening of the Gregor Jenkin Studio¹s firstdedicated retail outlet at 84 Shortmarket Street in Cape Town. The century-old space will feature key pieces from the studio¹s past four ranges including Industrial Revoulution an analogue tribute to the hardworking back-offices of Industria, and the new Donker range of lamps.
Birds Ceramics at Birds Boutique Cafe’ Fri 2 October, all day 7:00-19:00
Birds Café opened in Cape Town in 2005, with emphasis on the use of local and organic ingredients, and utilising personal/emotional, low-key D.I.Y design elements in its interior. Birds Cafe’ is located in an 18th century Cape Dutch family house and its kitchen is located where the original kitchen used to be. Its flair is very much about as if you were strolling into someone’s home and ordering a slice of freshly baked cake (cheese cake with organic cottage cheese, Apfel Strudel using fresh organic apples) with a cup of moer coffee.
Biblioteq and Pieter Hugo Sat 3 Oct, 12:00-14:00
Less is more is the concept for Biblioteq, a small bookshop in De Waterkant, Cape Town. Proprietor Rotem Shachar, a former art director, takes a curatorial approach to bookselling, highlighting exceptional books in photography, art and design. Pieter Hugo was born in 1976 and grew up in Cape Town. In 2008 Hugo was the winner of the KLM Paul Huf Award and the Arles Discovery Award at the Rencontres d’Arles Photography Festival in France. He had solo exhibitions at Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam, the Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool and Ffotogallery in Penarth, Wales. Group shows in 2008 included Street & Studio: An urban history of photography at Tate Modern, London, and Make Art/Stop AIDS at the Fowler Museum, UCLA. Hugo was the Standard Bank Young Artist for Visual Art in 2007. His previous books include Looking Aside, Messina/Musina, and The Hyena & Other Men.
Mbongeni Buthelezi SASOL Museum workshop Sat, 3 Oct, 10:00 and walkabout tour Sun, 4 Oct, 11:00
The Seippel Gallery, in association with Art Source South Africa, hosted by the Sasol Art Museum, Stellenbosch University is pleased to exhibit Mbongeni Buthelezi’s first national touring exhibition. This exhibition is open to the public during the Spring Art Tour. Titled ‘Imizwa Yami’, (….my feelings) this exhibition is a showcase of this exceptional artist’s expression of his South African experience.
Kathryn Smith Art Talk University of Stellenbosch Sat, 3 Oct, 14:00
Kathryn Smith is senior lecturer and head of Fine Arts in the Department of Visual Arts, University of Stellenbosch. As an artist, writer and curator, her work is actively shown, collected and published in South Africa and internationally. She was the recipient of the Standard Bank Young Artist Award in 2004.
Strijdom van der Merwe at Pier Rabe Antiques, Art and Contemporary Design. Stellenbosch
Sat 3 October 18:30
Van der Merwe uses the materials provided by the chosen site. His sculptural forms take shape in relation to the landscape. It is a process of working with the natural world, using sand, water, wood, rocks etc. He shapes these elements into geometrical forms that participate with their environment, continually changing until their final probable destruction. He observes the fragility of beauty, while not lamenting its passing, what remains is a photographic image, a fragment of the imagination. While a visual record is materially all hat is left, he also leaves us a reminder of the capacity, however feeble, of an individual to alter the universe by embracing the ceaseless changing of nature, actively contributing to it and, in so doing, modulating and beautifying the outcome.
SPRING ART TOUR Cape Restaurant Guide
Boo Radley’s 021 424 3040
Taking its cue from New York’s bistro-bar culture; Boo Radley’s Restaurant and Bar offers a shot of nostalgia and a spoonful of style to Cape Town’s City restaurant offering. The 50-seater assembly of leather banquets, café chairs and glossy wood tables are offset by a black and white checked floor and ceiling to street level windows. Palm fronds, leather-bound encyclopedia sets, smouldering black and white prints and a bluesy soundtrack set the scene for intimate dinners or jovial group gatherings.
Caveau on Heritage Square 021 422 1367
Caveau restaurant opened up in the antique cellars of Heritage Square four years ago. Since then its concept of unpretentious fine-dining has entrenched it as a firm favourite on the local culinary scene. Excellent food, an extensive and innovative wine list, relaxed atmosphere and attentive service have garnered extensive acclaim, including a place amongst the Condé Nast U.S. list of “35 Coolest International Night Spots.”
The Grand Café, Camps Bay 021 438 4253
Inside a place glowing with ambience and nostalgic romance – a place Hemmingway or Picasso would surely have frequented – the Grand Café on Victoria Road, Camps Bay is Cape Town’s latest destination to visit for beachside dining and hospitality. Emanating from its original sister, the grand café and rooms in Plettenberg bay, the grand café presents an eye catching and stylised authenticity, stirred to life by its new owner who has preserved its original deco origins.
The Kitchen, Woodstock 021 462 2201
Karen Dudley, the owner writes: For many years I have dreamed about, talked about, schemed about having a shop. Of course it would be brilliant! I would be able to make more food for more people and make catering a lot more accessible to a lot more people. And besides… there are so many delicious things to make and share…. Ultimately, I realise, that’s what I really really love… making and sharing delicious things with people. It truly thrills me!
Pane e Vino 021 883 8312
The Dalla Cias invite you to visit the place where their love of food and wine merge. There’s patriarch Giorgio Dalla Cia, who having worked as cellar master at Meerlust for 25 years, is renowned in wine circles as the doyen of Bordeaux wines in South Africa. Son George is a 3rd generation grappa distiller and the dynamic marketing mind behind Dalla Cia. Wife Elena heads PANE E VINO, which combines the essence of a “vineria” where you can enjoy the Dalla Cia wines and grappas, and that of an Italian “bar tavola calda”. Guests can have anything from just a coffee to a home-baked focaccia sandwich with Parma ham to a light Italian meal, choosing from slow-cooked mouthwatering dishes and fresh salads displayed in a deli fridge. Besides their wines the Dalla Cia Grappa is served as a digestive, to add to a caffe’ corretto, in ice cream, or even as a cocktail softened with cream. The meaning of the name “bread and wine” embodies its ethos: simple, traditional and unpretentious. The warmth and enthusiasm of the family is very much part of this philosophy – arrive as guests and leave feeling part of the clan….
De Wijnhuis 021 887 5844
The Wijnhuis was established in 1997 in the charming Dorpsmeent building on Church Street in Stellenbosch. It is an appealing venue in which one can conveniently sample wines from more than fifty (mainly) local producers. From the start the focus has been on boutique wineries and the Stellenbosch region. This has expanded to include token wines from other regions as well as some of the more iconic or big named Stellenbosch wines. Uniquely one can taste as well as purchase from the wine shop or enjoy a glass with dinner in the 200 seater restaurant.
Royale, Long Street 021 422 4536
Royale Eatery is a popular burger restaurant on Long Street. They are famous for having a large selection of burgers with some original options on the menu. There are chicken and vegetarian options, but in general these are large and tasty meat burgers. Burgers come with a choice of fries, potato wedges or sweet potato chips. You’ll also get sweet chilli sauce, tomato sauce, and sourcream condiments.
Glen Carlou Restaurant 021 875 5528
A warm welcome to Glen Carlou, situated in the heart of South Africa’s scenic Paarl Valley. The warm, dry summers and cold, wet winters of this area combine with an exciting variety of slopes and richness of our soils to create unique wine growing conditions. The Glen Carlou restaurant offers a tempting selection of cuisine, with both ethnic and international flavours, that can be enjoyed under the high wooden beams of the tasting arena or outside on the terrace, offering a panoramic view of vineyard and mountain
Being in a Mediterranean climate, it is apt that authenticity and finesse, whilst yielding robust flavors from local produce, is combined to create a ’sunshine cuisine’. General manager, Johan Laubser, comments; “Our executive chef, Christiaan Campbell, will create exceptional cuisine with fresh, vibrant menus. The Delaire Graff Estate restaurant offers an exceptional dining experience.
The Neighbourhood Bar is a unique and inviting social spot. Situated at 163 Long Street, the comfortable restaurant, bar and lounge is inspired by British up-market pubs providing high quality, fresh food. The large balcony overlooking Long Street makes it the ideal social hangout.”
